(More customer reviews)I formula fed my baby since she was born and really struggled to find a formula that didn't constipate. We tried Enfamil Premium, Similac, Sams Club Gentle Protein, and finally Nestle Good Start Supreme. All produced hard stool with the exception of the Good Start Supreme (orange can). While my daughter still struggles somewhat with gas, the loose stool is much more preferred for her at this young age (six weeks) than the other formulas.
We also tried the Nestle Good Start Protect Plus (green can) and this really upset my daughter's tummy. We were disappointed since we would love for her to have that extra immunity support, but at this age it seems the orange can is the only thing that she can tolerate.

(More customer reviews)I was using Kirkland brand formula because it's cheap and good quality. Target is a much more convenient place to shop, so I was so excited when I discovered their formula. It's about $1 more than Kirkland but half the price of Similac. Nutritional values are the same, and it has a good consistency. A big plus is that Target's brand doesn't foam up like Kirkland does, so I know my baby is actually getting the number of ounces I'm making for her. I definitely recommend!

(More customer reviews)Enfamil Premium Lipil Formula is the same as the previous flagship Mead Johnson formula--Enfamil Lipil--except that it has "prebiotics" added in. Our son was on Enfamil Lipil from September 2007-September 2008. He was breastfed and formula fed during this time. Our daughter, who is due in January 2010, will also be breastfed and formula fed for her first year of life. We tried two other formulas with our son--Similac Advance and Parent's Choice. The Similac was fine but clumped badly. During the time we experimented with the Parent's Choice formula, my son was consistently troubled by colds and the flu. I think the Parent's Choice formula lowered his immunity somehow and will never use it again. I believe that Mead Johnson's decision to use prebiotics is a good one. Our son had colic/acid reflux in part because his digestive system was not yet populated with the good bacteria for breaking down milk proteins. He was a lot more comfortable after we started putting a little Culturelle (a probiotic) in his formula in the evening. And since a lot of our immune system is in our digestive tract, he had fewer sick days after introducing the Culturelle. Probiotics and prebiotics will also help infants rebound from the negative effects of antibiotics like amoxicillin quicker.
Regarding the bpa found in formula can liners, I talked to an Enfamil customer service representative who told me that Mead Johnson now uses cans that are lined with a "modified polyester" that is bpa free. Similac Advance Earlyshield comes in a bpa-free can also (the SimplePac container).
Another concern parents have is the cost of formula. Name brand formulas are expensive! But if you think about it, you are feeding a human being for about $15 a week (a can usually lasts us 1.5 to 2 weeks). $15 a week is peanuts compared to what a hungry teenager devours! And with name brand formulas you are getting the absolute best product available--Bill Gates couldn't buy a better formula than what's on the shelves at Target or Wal-mart.
If you are a new parent and feel overwhelmed by the infant formula section of your grocery store (as I was in September 2007), I suggest starting with the flagship formula of either Mead Johnson (Enfamil Premium Lipil), Abbott Laboratories (Similac Advance Earlyshield), or Nestle (Good Start Gentle Plus or Good Start Protect Plus). They are all excellent infant formulas. You just have to see what works for you and your baby.

(More customer reviews)We tried several formula's for our newborn before this one and none worked as well. It's the exact same formula of ingredients as Enfamil Gentlease Lipil but for 1/2 the price. What we like best is that when shaken, there are virtually no bubbles or foaming which is great for newborn babies or babies with spit up or gas issues. The partially broken down whey is easier on babies stomach to digest. Works very well and we will be exclusively buying this product from now on, however, the six pack has no price advantage once shipping costs are added in. If you live where you don't have access to Target, it pays to have it shipped. If you live close to a Target, buy it at the store.

(More customer reviews)I switched to this formula after trying Parents Choice (all generic store brand formulas are made by the same company) for a month (she is now 8 weeks old). My baby girl was constipated only going once every two days (while I was holding her legs up for her) and when she did it was as formed as adult stools. I read that the comfort proteins would help her have softer stools and more often. Even though it is over twice as expensive, I figured it was worth a try. She has been on the formula for a week now and I am quite pleased. The formula mixes up easier and faster than the generic brand, it isn't frothy or full of air bubbles and it doesn't smell bad (her burps smell like fresh milk instead of rotten milk). She doesn't fuss as much during feedings and she eats more. Her stools are soft and they aren't full of curds, but they are still very smelly (who's poop isn't) and the stool color is completely different- it is a dark green-dark grey mud like. When she passes gas it is more smelly too. She seems to be going more often at least once a day.
The powder is very fine- I noticed that the can weighs slightly less than the other brands its size and I think it runs out quicker but that could be because she is eating more now too.
I wanted the generic brand to work for the price but I now see that it is worth paying extra for her to not be grumpy and constipated (I am getting everyone I know signed up for coupons). I am hoping that the cultures will be beneficial in the long run as well. Take note though--I just read on a website to not heat this formula past body temp or it will kill the cultures.

(More customer reviews)When I suffered from a low milk supply with my 3rd child I tried many formulas until I found this one. My baby refused all others. This one is the closest tasting to breast milk, has the best ingredients, and spit up is no where near as foul as with other formulas.
It can cause a bit of constipation, so I recommend talking with your ped about it. Mine recommended giving my baby 2oz of prune juice 2x a day. (And he was a Preemie) It does bubble up a LOT if you shake it up when mixing. Use a spoon instead, or add 2-3 drops of gas drops into the bottle. (Wal-Mart sells the generic form of Mylicon for around $4 and you get double the amount, instead of $12)
I have had another child since I first found this formula and I would use nothing else! Oh, and remember to save the UPC codes to mail in...you get 1 can free for every 12 you buy!

When I went to Walmart and saw that they had raised the price from $4.44 to $7.16 a can we decided to try this. He spits up EVERY time we feed this to him. He also is very gassy and fussy (not like him). It's too bad I made the bad decision to order $200.00 worth of this stuff. My local grocery store tried to get it for me but told me their distributer does not carry it. I also would like to know why it is so hard to find!! After the birth of my first child, I was unsure what to do, and I wasn't too keen on any of the formulas I'd seen friends using, as they all smelled metallic to me and did not look at all like something I would want my child to injest. A friend, with 3 kids, recommended Good Start, not only because it was a super value on all levels, but also because it was digested most like breast-milk, therefore her kids never experienced discomfort as a result of her using it. I tried Good Start, and was so pleased with the smell and consistency of it, as well as my child's reaction to it, I have been recommending it to friends with new ones ever since. Now, after the birth of my second child, when the time came to supplement, it was a no-brainer to purchase the Good Start. My children have never had any problems with this formula, and many of my friends whose children used other formula brands have had digestion issue after issue. (More customer reviews)We are still undecided about using whole milk or organic whole milk, and Similac 2 has been great for the transition. We started using it at 11 months, mixing half Similac 2 and hald Similac Advance. I do recommend always mixing half and half when changing formulas/milk. (Unless, of course, you are changing formulas due to feeding intolerance.)
Also, this is very easy when traveling and going out for the day. No need to worry with keeping whole milk cold.
I have been very happy with both Similac Advance and Similac 2! I think that Similac is much easier on tummies than Enfamil.

(More customer reviews)I disagree with the reviewers who said that Similac was gross and Enfamil tasted better... I think it really depends on your taste. My baby tried Enfamil and didn't like it, and I actually agreed with her: it seems that Similac tastes most like breast milk, and since I am nursing and supplementing with formula, Similac is working best for us... Just try different formulas before making a definite choice, I don't think that one milk is better than another, it really depends on your needs -and on what your baby will take.
